Building a Sustainable Community
Our first steps to fulfilling the needs of our growing community on our land in Liberia, will be to establish a system for self sustainable farming. Much of the land and forests of Liberia have been reconstituted for cash crop exports. Foreign companies buy land to plant rubber trees while many of the citizens go without food to eat. Many Liberian people already have knowledge of agriculture, and we want to give them the recourses they need to provide for themselves and their families.
Another way we want to introduce a sense of sustainability to the land is through waste management and recycling. A lot of the “Water pollution in Liberia is caused due to poor sanitation and improper disposal of domestic wastes. Poor sanitation in Liberia is due to defecation in the open because there is a lack of decent toilets and latrines in most rural areas.” - Study.com (What Causes Water Pollution in Liberia)
Many countries have developed simple ways of constructing latrines in rural areas to reuse waste for fertilizer. In addition to simple ingenuity like this many rural areas in Liberia have a complete lack of garbage disposal and recycling. On the strips of road that divide the forests and the villages you will find tons and tons of plastic bags and bottles, clothes, shoes, especially in rural areas there is no conceivable place for trash disposal. We hope to introduce in Bonokollie Town a simple system of waste management that could possibly benefit neighboring villages and lead to a more sustainable future for the county especially in these vital locations neighboring endangered ecosystems.
